Letter: Sharpen the saw or risk a dull existence
A well-known behavioral scientist/author, Stephen R. Covey, noted it is important to stop sawing when the saw gets dull, and sharpen the saw before continuing work. As applied in life, we all need rest, relaxation, and renewal to avoid or deal with burnout. In my efforts to contribute to what I deem important in life, I have found a greater need lately to sharpen the saw, and such need increases in frequency since becoming a septuagenarian. I realize our leaders need to renew, revitalize their energy in government, education, and other fields. However, it seems as a society we overdo this, and in not-appropriate ways. The need to vent likewise should be kept within appropriate bounds.
John Adams said: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” We must be moral and God-fearing as a people if we want to maintain the freedoms and prosperity of our country. That also includes when we are renewing, or “sharpening the saw!” Entertainment currently is filled with violence, destruction, foul language, immoral sexuality. This is perhaps the root cause of all our ills in the U.S.A. We must remember Jesus Christ is the true God of this hemisphere, this land, and honor and follow him. The garbage dispensed by our current media outlets is foul and gives a real stink to our nation! This makes it difficult to sharpen our saws in helpful ways.
