Letter: Urging your support for Rep. Steve Handy

Sep 23, 2022

I support the write-in candidate Representative Steve Handy (R), 16th House District, who represents portions of Layton, Clearfield and South Weber. He has served this district since 2010, lived in Layton for 44 years, and served two terms on the Layton City Council. He has improved transportation and infrastructure, widened educational and human services opportunities, and addressed important environmental issues such as clean air quality and the survival of the Great Salt Lake. He is a Conservative, working to lower taxes, protect gun ownership and unborn life, and curb inflation.

Republican caucuses this spring were poorly attended in District 16. At the Davis County GOP Convention only 99 delegates represented the 11,773 registered Republicans in the district. Of those, 59 voted to nominate a candidate other than Steve Handy in the upcoming elections. This is just 0.005 percent of Republicans in House District 16! Those convention delegates chose to turn aside a proven winner for an untested model.

This “untested model” is newcomer Trevor Lee. He has offered vague generalities about his political philosophy and goals but very specific and inaccurate views of Handy’s legislative record. He embarrassed himself with his own party. Lee used a disparaging term for transgender athletes, earning him a strong rebuke from the Davis County Republican Committee who condemned his “transphobic comments.”

I urge House District 16 voters of any party to write in the full name, “Steve Handy,” in the space allotted on this year’s Davis County ballot. Ensure Representative Handy continues his service to the residents of east Layton, Clearfield and South Weber.
