Letter: Waste of money to hold individualized graduation events

Apr 28, 2023

It appears that the Office of Equity, Diversion and Inclusion is nothing more than an Office of Divisiveness. To have separate graduation ceremonies for the LGBTQ Community or students, then the Pacific Islanders, then the Asian, then the Latin and African communities does nothing to bond the student body. The article in the paper on April 20th states that the LGBTQ sometimes feel underrepresented. Might be true but just because they “feel” that way does not mean that we have to go out our way to assure that they get special recognition. The vast majority of students, regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, sex orientation, etc. do not get special recognition. Each and every student that is called across the podium to receive their degree is addressed by name only — and there is no special recognition other than their name. This Office of Equity, Diversion and Inclusion is a total waste of tax dollars and resources. Some people might not like this opinion — but think about it. Are any of the students at the school special and require or deserve special recognition over the rest of the students? I think not. Just my opinion and since my tax dollars also support and finance the education system in Utah — I am appalled by the WOKE attitude present. And just for the record — I could care less if you are LGBTQ oriented, or a different ethnic background (mine is varied). Weber State University and the rest of the Universities in the State should do away with pandering to any single group just because they “feel” less important.
