Letter: The former president is a true snollygoster

Jun 1, 2023

I want to thank a prior contributor for two things: first, for introducing me to the term, “snollygoster,” (meaning a “shrewd, unprincipled person, especially a politician), and second, for prompting me to look up Paul Harvey’s, 1965 broadcast. In it, Harvey said, “If I Were the Devil, I would convince people that Bad is Good … and with promises of higher ratings, I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames …,” which immediately called to mind the Fox News $787m settlement for the lies they spread about Dominion’s role in the 2020 election.

The contributor claimed the Durham report “pretty much exonerated” the former president of any wrongdoing (it doesn’t), and that Trump had everything “in check.” For the record, here is a partial list of things DJT has “in check:” Trump U guilty of fraud ($25m settlement), revelation of sexual predation (confirmed by 17 women), Trump foundation guilty of fraud, Mueller (a conservative Republican) finds evidence of 10 acts of obstruction, impeachment for attempted bribery of Ukraine, Trump organization found guilty of tax fraud, 7 top aides convicted of felonies, DJT indicted for hush money payments, Trump CFO jailed at Rikers, impeachment for incitement of insurrection, co-conspirators in sedition receive extensive jail sentences, and the list goes on.

These are all results of things DJT did (not “nonsense from the left”). We know, because the former president’s immorality and dishonesty is a matter of public record — clear evidence of calling “Bad, Good” as Paul Harvey said. Put another way, when we elect a genuine crook to high office, the inevitable result will be crooked (criminal) behavior.

Mitch McConnell said about January 6, 2021, “There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day, … [and he] is still liable for everything he did while he was in office, … We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former presidents are not immune from being held accountable by either one.” With at least three major indictments (and possible convictions) pending, the book is not yet closed on the “Bad” from this particular former president — a true snollygoster!
