Letter: American tech superiority critical to small biz success

Mar 31, 2023

As a small business owner, technology is extremely important for the success and growth of my business. Online tools help us develop more streamlined and effective operations and help us remain competitive, reach new customers, and limit costs. Small businesses like mine and so many others are essential to Utah’s economy. In the Beehive state alone, Utah’s 313,000 small businesses employ over 600,000 people, and they make up over 99% of all businesses in our state. Ensuring they have a level playing field to compete and innovate is vital.

However, I’m concerned that some members of Congress are considering legislation that would undermine U.S. technology and hurt the tools that my fellow entrepreneurs and I use every day. Even worse, by tying the hands of American tech innovators to develop new technologies, we are creating an opportunity for China to lead the way in tech innovation including some of the key tech that is being developed here in our state. I’ve read numerous accounts that show China is already outpacing the United States in developing key technologies, we can’t let that be the case.

Washington must stand up for small businesses and support policies that expand U.S. tech innovation, allow us to remain competitive in an increasingly digital world, and reduces our dependency on foreign technology. When we support our small business communities and the tools that power us, we are building a stronger, more competitive country.
