Letter: Public lands should stay in the public’s hands
I wish I had millions of other people’s money to create ads, videos and lawsuits to get things I want. Utah does. Utah has used taxpayer dollars to file numerous lawsuits, and their most recent is over public lands. Even though Utah gave up the right to own the BLM lands it is suing over, it doesn’t mind spending taxpayer dollars on the fight. The thing is, if Utah did win the lawsuit (one they hope a favorable president and Supreme Court will okay), they would lose millions in revenue the lands generate and would have to scramble to pay the management costs. Because Utah would struggle, (fire suppression costs alone are in the millions), they would need to extract every fossil fuel and mineral available (creating more air pollution, fires, drought and heat) and open lands to developers, which we know they love to do. (Just look at the 11 ports around Utah, subsidized with taxpayer money, with little accountability.) So why should Utahns care? According to polls, a majority of Utahns recreate outdoors, and 70% favor politicians who put more emphasis on protecting lands, air quality, water, etc. rather than extractive industries. If I had millions, I would show you how much better off we are when public lands are managed by the federal government and how we benefit from open spaces, economically and mentally. The government doesn’t get everything right, but when it comes to protecting our lands for all users, they do. If you think so, contact legislators and tell them, “Keep public lands in public hands.”
