Letter: Utah pursuing power play in hopes of netting NHL team

Feb 1, 2024

Many years ago, there were rumors that the New York Islanders — despite their incredible history of hoisting the Stanley Cup four straight years — would move to Kansas City unless improvements were made to their arena situation. The Oakland A’s are headed to Las Vegas for precisely that reason.

The bigger question is whether Salt Lake City should wait for the NHL to expand to two new cities in a few years, or turn up the heat on the Arizona Coyotes now. (The team is in a real debacle.)

It sounds like Ryan Smith’s group is going for it now. Hopefully it doesn’t detract from the plan to bring Major League Baseball to Utah. If done right, it could help amplify the message of an attractive pro sports destination with a new fan base.
