Letter: O’Connor’s abortion rights legacy in tatters
Former Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, died recently. On the subject of abortion, she had always insisted that “no undue burden” be imposed on women who may need that medical option.
Few Americans probably remember that she was replaced on the court by Justice Samuel Alito, who orchestrated the overturning of Roe V. Wade, a right that women had enjoyed for fifty years. We are now suffering the consequences of his decision. Frankly, to use the word ‘justice’ in the same sentence as the name Samuel Alito is a blatant contradiction.
Incidentally, five of the nine Supreme Court Justices are Roman Catholic. Could it be that privately held religious beliefs are being mixed in public policy?
