Letter: Blake Moore holds China accountable on environmental issues
For over four decades, the US has maintained a commitment to Taiwan’s defense and self-governance. This allegiance isn’t just a vestige of Cold War strategy, but a reminder of America’s promise to stand up against coercion in all its forms.
Last month, Rep. Blake Moore took a bold step to counter the PRC’s aggression. His bill threatens China’s Permanent Normal Trade Relations status if the CCP violates Taiwan’s sovereignty, whether through military aggression or economic coercion.
This isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Every day, China marches on a nefarious procession to crush freedom around the world. In fact, US intelligence warns that Xi has plans to annex Taiwan by 2027.
Trade is the giant’s soft underbelly. It’s what gives China its global influence and economic leverage. Moore is spot on to hit them where it would hurt most.
Interestingly, China’s poor record on environmental and human rights is part and parcel of its aggressive economic agenda. Moore is using similar tactics by supporting a bill that highlights China’s environmental abuses.
Moore’s steps to hold China accountable through trade policy is exactly how to stymie their ability to intimidate Taiwan. It’s smart policy that makes for a safer world.
