Letter: Values in Republican Party platform don’t match Trump

Mar 22, 2024

The Utah Republican State platform states in the preamble, it “supports a government based upon a moral and spiritual foundation”. In the section on Ethics and Standards, the party states, “We demand honesty, integrity, morality and accountability of our public officials.” Under Equal Rights, the party platform claims “no individual is entitled to rights that exceed or supersede the God-given individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”

So how do I, as a Republican who believes in these values expressed in the party platform, support the Republican candidate for President? Donald Trump claims absolute immunity for any crime committed while he was in office. And he is claiming this immunity in a case where he paid hush money to a porn star with whom he committed adultery.

Does Donald Trump think he’s too special to support the Republican platform? Or maybe he doesn’t even believe in the Republican platform. Wouldn’t that make him, and his supporters, RINOs? Or is the Republican platform now just meaningless words?
