Letter: GOP lawmakers flout their support for rule of law

May 23, 2024

The parade of matching red tie MAGA surrogates, postponing their own responsibilities in Washington D.C., to interfere in the responsibilities of the Manhattan Campaign Finance Law trial in support of Donald Trump. Inside of court they were attempting to influence and/or intimidate the judge, prosecutors, witnesses and jurors by their presence. Outside of court they were undermining the rule of law by attacking the judge, the judge’s family, the prosecutors, the jurors, the witnesses, violating the intent of the gag order, the judicial process and its institutions. So much for the MAGA Republican Party’s stand for the Rule of Law: For me, but not for thee!

This Red Tie Brigade included Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. In his first public interview after being elected speaker of the House, Speaker Johnson told Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “I am a Bible-believing Christian. Someone asked me today in the media, they said, ‘People are curious, what does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?’ Johnson said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it.’ That’s my worldview.”

Why then was Johnson, Speaker of the House, second in line to the presidency, at the Manhattan court in support of Donald Trump? Per Speaker Johnson’s suggestion, I picked up and glanced through my bibles, but could not find Speaker Johnson’s biblical worldview on the issue of Donald Trump with the words “suckup” and/or “bootlicker” in my King James Version, my Living Bible Version or my New International Version. However, maybe the words, “suckup” and/or “bootlicker”, are in the worldview Bible version that Donald Trump is peddling to his sycophants.
