Letter: Remembering the sacrifice of a fallen soldier

May 30, 2024

Today I thought of my fellow soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in “my” war, the Viet Nam War. But one stands out: Captain Bill Taylor. As a brand new second lieutenant, I was his artillery forward observer in B Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 1st Cavalry Division. After a battle, he did something no one else I served with ever witnessed: we secured the perimeter and he asked us to have a moment of silence for our casualties as well as the enemy dead. He reminded us that those who had died left behind families and friends. As for the enemy dead, he said they were no longer our enemy and had been doing what we were doing: fighting for our countries. War is hell for everyone. Captain Taylor died on 15 August 1966, his last day in country. I will never forget him.
