Letter: We should speak up for immigrants
Have any of us thought of what we would do if we could not feed our children? What if gang members threatened your son? Or you your husband had been killed. I have a friend who had to move here because her 14 year old son was threatened by gangs and her husband and brother had been killed.
Most immigrants do not want to be here. They came out of desperation, and became our essential workers. They contribute to our economy through their work, but also by paying taxes and contributing to social security, which they will never benefit from. They are essential- not only for their work, but for the diversity and experiences they offer.
According to an article in Axios in early July, Ice agents have increased round up of non-criminal immigrants in Utah. People are living in fear, unable to work. With this current administration, there is so much to speak against-attacks on our air quality, way of lives, health care, economy, public lands, and integrity, but the poor and those who cannot defend themselves are bearing the brunt of attacks. I’m reminded of a poem written by a German minister during the reign of Hitler:
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
It’s time we speak up for them.
