Letter: Hooper will be damaged by extension of State Route 177

By Sandi Pittman - | Apr 24, 2026

Utah Department of Transportation has unveiled their plans to extend State Route 177 right through the eastern edge of our quiet, little town of Hooper, along 5100 West. This major road expansion will be a 4-lane road cutting through our residential neighborhood that has a current speed limit of 30 mph.

This road expansion is a terrible idea for Hooper. It will destroy our quality of life here, bringing air pollution, noise pollution and light pollution to our small town, and making it very difficult for Hooper residents to go any where to the east out of our city.

Scientific studies have proven that if you live, work or go to school within 1,500 feet of a busy road that it will lower your I.Q. from the effects of exhaust pollution on your brain. Diesel exhaust is even more harmful to your brain and body than car exhaust.

UDOT is trying to put a harmless spin on this road expansion, telling us that all these poor commuters who live in Weber County, but work elsewhere, will be thrilled with it, while all of us living in Hooper will suffer the bad consequences of it.

I believe the true purpose of this project is to lay the infrastructure to eventually funnel large amounts of semitruck traffic through our city to the proposed Inland Port, another bad, polluting project that state and local government are trying to cram down our throats in western Weber County.

Hooper political leaders seem resigned or apathetic about this massive road expansion, and its detrimental effects on our quality of life here. In a phone call I recently asked Mayor Sheri Bingham how she felt abut this proposed project and she very cautiously replied, “This road has been planned for many years”. That may be true but it needs to be scrapped before it ruins Hooper. We don’t want the Inland Port and we don’t want a huge high-speed road through our peaceful community.
