Letter: US needs to aid displaced Afghans

By Ken Freimuth - | Apr 24, 2026

According to the New York Times and other major media outlets, more than 1,000 Afghans who helped the U.S military as translators or performed other support functions, and who were promised resettlement in the U.S., are now facing serious disappointment and danger. They are currently in Qatar pending resettlement here under a plan known as the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.

However, that seems to be changing: they now face being sent back to Afghanistan where the Taliban will very likely execute them. Or they may be sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo, another war-torn country where there will be other dangers.

What are we thinking? Not only is this inhumane, it is a breach of trust.

How do we think this will help when we ask for local help in another conflict or war? How does this square with the claim by some that we are a “Christian nation?”
