LETTER: Federal troops and ICE shouldn’t be a part of elections
President Donald Trump has expressed a willingness to send federal troops and/or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to polling places this fall. I believe that is illegal, but when and who has stopped illegal actions of Trump before it was too late to reverse them. The president told reporters he would “do anything necessary to make sure we have honest elections.” I did not get that impression from Trump’s actions during the 2020 elections for “honest elections.”
You know the federal troops and/or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents do not have to be anywhere near the election polls if dispatched. They can set up roadblocks on access to the polling places outside a defined perimeter. They can make polling places in mostly Democratic areas difficult to access, which they have done before. Stop anyone who looks like they might vote Democratic, say their citizenship papers, Real ID, passports, Tribal ID, etc. are fake, if they bother looking at them at all, take them to a detainment center for hours and release them after the polls have closed.
By the way, how are those ICE investigations into the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti back in January going without the Minnesota state law enforcement officials participating in the investigation? ICE is uncooperative in deadly investigations by ICE agents. ICE is uncooperative in deadly investigations while in ICE detainment. ICE lawyers providing false arrest justifications including the unlawful detention of U.S. citizens and individuals with no criminal records. ICE lawyers being untruthful in court proceedings. ICE and DOJ violating court orders, with some judges describing themselves as “fatigued” by the, at times, unlawful behavior. In response to non-compliance by DOJ and ICE, courts are utilizing, or threatening to use, special masters and injunctive power to oversee and enforce compliance with constitutional standards, removing the typical deference given to executive agencies arguments.
So, Trump wants to send federal troops and ICE agents that the courts have found to be uncooperative, untruthful, non-compliant, violating court orders, unlawful behavior, etc. to polling places to make sure we have “honest elections”?
