Letter: Applauding the new additions to the Standard-Examiner

By Lynn Chatterton - | Sep 4, 2026

Thanks, Standard Examiner, for the new additions to your paper!

I have always enjoyed Dear Annie. It’s comforting to know that I don’t have it so bad. And Dr. Steve has beneficial perspectives. With your new additions I can get some useful “Hints From Heloise” and helpful comments from Dr. Roach’s “To Your Good Health”.

I have been getting your paper for many years. I ignore the Sports page, not my thing. I get a good laugh from the comics, and I look for TV shows to schedule for my quiet times in the evening. I make sure that I am in a decent mood before I skim through the political stuff in your Opinion pages.

I am enjoying your newly added columns because they make me feel like I am learning something new to make my life a bit better instead of being reminded of how unsettling life can be with today’s divisiveness and negativity. I need political and world news, no need to cut back on that, but I also want to grow and move forward with positive information also. There are just so many pages of information that pull me down and make me want to move to Canada or buy more survivalist gear.

And now you are offering the “Kid’s Corner”. Even though my little munchkins are all grown and miles away, I still get a smile when I turn to this page. There is still a child in me, and I find that it is more enjoyable to solve the puzzles in the kid section vs the adult crossword puzzle.

Thanks for including the kids. Let’s hope that they skip over the Opinion pages.

I feel like your paper now includes more than articles for sports fans, crime news addicts and those wanting to hear about how their political team is better at tearing down the other team’s sandcastles.

Good for you Standard Examiner! I walk a little faster to my mailbox now.
