Opinion: Forget Sundance Film Festival, here are some actual fun things to do

By Mark Saal, Standard-Examiner Staff - | Jan 15, 2017

OGDEN — First, “over-rated” actress Meryl Streep disrespects our next commander-in-chief. Now, we’re about to get 11 straight days of reminders that the Hollywood liberal elites simply don’t care about us.

On Thursday, the annual Sundance Film Festival gets under way. However, unlike past years, no screenings will be held in Ogden. Last July, Ogden got what amounts to a “Dear John” letter from the Sundance Institute, informing her the institute was dropping the Ogden portion of the festival.

The institute said it wanted to engage with Ogden “in a different way” by replacing Ogden’s portion of the film festival with individual community screenings during the summer and fall.

Yeah? Well, that’s convenient, because I want to engage with Sundance in a “different way” too. By attending anything BUT the snooty film festival’s Park City and Salt Lake City screenings.

A quick check of the Standard-Examiner’s “Events” page on its website lists more than 250 separate events for Jan. 19-29, the dates of the Sundance Film Festival. So here’s my plan for one event per day to help you over your grief. For more information, visit www.standard.net/calendar.

• Thursday, Jan. 19: We may not be getting the films up here, but we can still enjoy the spoils of going to the movies. Jan. 19 is National Popcorn Day, and in honor of that, The Hub — the food court in the Taggart Student Center at Utah State University — is offering free popcorn. And just in case you realize the gasoline it takes to drive all the way up to Logan sort of defeats the purpose of “free” popcorn, on the way back you can hit the Brigham City Museum, 24 N. 300 West, Brigham City. The exhibit “An Art Journey Through Time” is on display from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring masterworks from the permanent collection. This is free, too.

• Friday, Jan. 20: Achtung, baby! It’s the annual Sneddon Hof GermanFest, Jan. 20-21 at the Golden Spike Event Center, 1000 N. 1200 West, Ogden. The event features authentic German music, food and crafts. Wear your leather britches! Learn to yodel! Even do the “Chicken Dance!” Now then, doesn’t that sound like more fun than sitting through some brooding film about liberal angst?

• Saturday, Jan. 21: It’s the event whose name looks like a ransom note. Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music presents “snOwFOAM” at 7 p.m. in Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd., Ogden. For $18, you can see the Memphis-based singer/songwriter couple Amy LaVere and Will Sexton in concert. And the best part? It’s in the very same venue a certain independent film festival used. Kinda poetic, don’t you agree?

• Sunday, Jan. 22: Forget those independent filmmakers and their black-clad ilk. Go see some elk instead. From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area, in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, offers horse-drawn sleigh rides to view the wild elk. Admission is $5; $3 for ages 4-8.

• Monday, Jan. 23: Spend a night at the theater with “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a musical featuring more than 30 classic hit songs from the ’50s and ’60s. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Terrace Plaza Playhouse, 99 E. 4700 South, Washington Terrace. Tickets are $9-14.

• Tuesday, Jan. 24: There’s no better way to register your displeasure midway through the film festival that shall remain nameless than saying, “Yeah? Well, we’d rather attend a free Medicare presentation at the library than watch one of your crummy old movies.” All the truly trendy people will be at “Medicare 101″ at 6:30 p.m. in the Kaysville Library, 215 N. Fairfield Road, Kaysville. It’s a free class providing information on Medicare eligibility, enrollment periods and benefits.

• Wednesday, Jan. 25: Park City isn’t the only place with world-class skiing. It’s Ladies Night on Wednesdays from 3-9 p.m. at Powder Mountain ski resort in the mountains above Ogden Valley. The event features $15 discounted passes for women, raffle prizes and more.

• Thursday, Jan. 26: Catch “You Can’t Take It With You,” at 7:30 p.m. at CenterPoint Legacy Theater, 525 N. 400 West, Centerville. It’s described as a heartwarming, nutty adventure about a couple ready to tie the knot. Tickets are $14-25.50.

• Friday, Jan. 27: You don’t have to go completely film festival-less this January. Check out the Lady Wild Film Festival, at 6:30 p.m. in the Ogden High School Auditorium, 2828 Harrison Blvd., Ogden. The inaugural festival showcases feature length and short films with strong female leads or characters. Tickets are $15.

• Saturday, Jan. 28: Drop by Family Snow Day at 9 a.m. at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., Ogden. Bring the whole family for sledding and other snow activities, followed by a winter-themed children’s movie with warm drinks and popcorn. Admission is just $6, but space is limited, so call today to reserve your spot.

• Sunday, Jan. 29: Finally, what better way to tweak a few liberal noses than taking in a very politically incorrect circus — complete with lions, tigers, elephants and other “precision performing animals.” Yeah. It’s a veritable nightmare for PETA. The Jordan World Circus begins at 1 p.m. in the Golden Spike Arena, 1000 N. 1200 West, Ogden. Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for children.

Oh, and wear your fur coat, if you’ve got one.
