Train handbrake catches fire in Layton

By Jesus Lopez Jr., Standard-Examiner Staff - | Oct 25, 2014

LAYTON — A Union Pacific locomotive had to be sent to Salt Lake City for repairs after a hand brake caught fire on Saturday.

Crews discovered the fire during a routine crew change stop outside of Layton around 11 a.m., said Jeff DeGraff, director of Corporate Relations and Media at Union Pacific.

The fire was minor and quickly extinguished, DeGraff said. There were no injuries or further damage to the train.

Although the malfunction managed to slow the main line for a moment, DeGraff said Union Pacific managed to send the rest of the train on its way and return to normal operations quickly.

“All normal operations have resumed and are good to go,” DeGraff said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
