Strike force busts alleged South Ogden counterfeit sunglasses operation
OGDEN — A state strike force broke up a counterfeit high-end sunglasses sales operation allegedly run out of a South Ogden home, prosecutors say.
Yosis Larson, 52, was booked at the Weber County Jail on Friday, Dec. 23 and has been charged with felony counts of criminal simulation, communications fraud and engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity.
Undercover agents contacted a seller of Oakley, Ray-Ban, Victoria Beckham and Vonzipper sunglasses who placed ads on KSL.com, according to the 2nd District Court indictment filed by the Utah Attorney General’s Office. They arranged to buy sunglasses at a South Ogden home on Sept. 7 and three days later bought more from the woman at the Brigham City Peach Days Festival, the document said
The sunglasses were sold for $40 or less a pair, agents said. Oakley retail prices range from $100 to $450 and Ray-Bans start at $130, according to the companies’ websites.
Agents of the SECURE strike force — short for Statewide Enforcement of Crimes by Undocumented Residents — served a search warrant Oct. 17 and seized 310 pairs of sunglasses valued at $15,100. Larson was indicted Nov. 22 and she was served a summons Dec. 7. Her first court appearance is set for Jan. 18.
Efforts to contact John E. Cummings, listed as Larson’s attorney of record, were not immediately successful.
A brand protection agent for Oakley and Ray-Ban examined the seized sunglasses and determined they were counterfeit, task force agent Josh Salisbury said in a probable cause statement.
Larson said she bought the sunglasses in bulk from dhgate.com, the document said.
Oakley urges consumers to report fakes via an online form.
