Flint Harrison found dead at Davis County Jail, police say

DAVIS COUNTY — After being arrested in connection with the kidnapping of five women and the murder of a UTA worker, Flint Harrison was found dead at Davis County Jail on Monday morning, July 25.

A news release from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a report that an inmate hanged himself at 12:17 a.m. Monday. Deputies and nursing staff attempted to revive Harrison, 52, for about 20 minutes but were unsuccessful.

Harrison was not on suicide watch, didn’t have a cellmate and hanged himself with a bed sheet, the Associated Press reported.

Davis County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. DeeAnn Servey told the Associated Press that Harrison’s son and alleged co-conspirator, 22-year-old Dereck James “D.J.” Harrison, has been notified of his father’s death and put on suicide watch. She declined to tell the Associated Press when jail staff last checked on Flint Harrison.

According to news reports, family members of UTA worker Kay Ricks, 63, whom Flint and his son are accused of abducting and killing, say they’re disappointed Flint won’t have to answer for a “brutal and senseless” crime after he was found dead.

According to ABC News, Ricks’ family said in a statement they want Utah authorities to release Flint’s son to Wyoming to speed up the process of facing murder charges there.

The Ricks family said while they don’t know why Harrison apparently killed himself, they think it may have had something to do with the hard work of Utah and Wyoming law enforcement officers who built the case against him, according to reports.

Weber County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Lt. Lane Findlay said two detectives from his office will be conducting an investigation into Harrison’s death.

“My understanding is that it is possibly suicide,” Findlay said. “We’ll wait for the medical examiner’s report before making that determination.”

Flint and Dereck Harrison led police on a two-state, five-day manhunt after the two allegedly tied up and assaulted a woman and her four teenage daughters in a Centerville basement May 10. The men are accused of using drugs at the time of the incident, leading them to believe the mother reported them to authorities.

Ricks’ body and truck were found in southwestern Wyoming, near the area where the Harrisons were taken into custody May 14. Ricks, whose body was found May 17, died from blows to the head, police say.

Flint Harrison faced a slew of charges, including five counts of aggravated kidnapping, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of first-degree murder. Flint Harrison’s preliminary hearing regarding the Utah kidnapping charges was slated for Aug. 9.

Though Dereck Harrison waived his right to a preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to the Utah charges, Flint Harrison had yet to enter a plea.

The Harrisons were expected to be transferred to Wyoming to faces charges connected to Ricks’ death, the Associated Press reported. Prosecutors in Wyoming were awaiting the transfer before announcing whether they would seek the death penalty for the two men, the Associated Press reported.

An in-custody death investigation is being conducted by the Weber County Crime Scene Investigators and State Medical Examiner, the release said.
