OGDEN — Charging documents filed Monday gave more details about a confrontation last week in which an Ogden police officer shot a man who allegedly threatened a woman with a knife and then advanced toward the officer.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office charged Casey Pacheco, 32, in 2nd District Court with second-degree felony assault on a peace officer and class A misdemeanor threatening with a dangerous weapon in a fight.

Police arrested Pacheco on Saturday after he was released from a local hospital, where he had been treated for two gunshot wounds suffered Wednesday afternoon in Ogden. He was ordered held without bail in the Weber County Jail.

A county attorney’s investigator said in a probable cause statement that as an Ogden officer arrived to check on a 911 call about a man holding a knife to a woman’s throat, Pacheco allegedly “brandished a large knife and walked towards the officer.” The officer retreated and drew his handgun, fearing for his safety, the affidavit said.

According to witnesses — police said they interviewed several construction workers and others nearby who reported that they saw the incident in the 200 block of 26th Street — the officer repeatedly told Pacheco to drop the knife and back away.

“Pacheco had the knife to his own throat and was walking back and forth in an erratic manner,” the affidavit said. “Pacheco was yelling at the officer, ‘You are going to have to kill me.'”

Pacheco allegedly advanced on the officer, walked back the other direction for a few steps, then turned back toward the officer. “Pacheco was still brandishing the knife up to his throat but was screaming at the officer and moving towards him in a threatening manner,” the affidavit said. “The officer believed Pacheco had the intent to continue to close the distance between them and then use the knife to stab and kill him.”

As Pacheco moved closer, the officer fired and the man dropped the knife. At a press conference Thursday, Ogden Police Chief Eric Young said the officer fired four times, hitting Pacheco twice.

The officer has been put on paid leave pending an investigation, standard practice when an officer uses deadly force. The Weber County Critical Incident team is investigating the use of deadly force and Pacheco’s involvement.
