SUNSET — Two people died after a pair of SUVs collided head-on Sunday night, Police Chief Ken Eborn said.

A southbound Honda Pilot driven by a 33-year-old Roy man swerved into the northbound lanes of Main Street, colliding with a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by a 46-year-old Clearfield woman, Eborn said Monday.

“We don’t understand yet why he went over in that lane,” the chief said. There was “nothing obvious” to indicate the cause of the 8 p.m. crash and investigators likely will need to wait for blood toxicology results, he said.

Eborn said a third driver, moving northbound, saw the southbound car coming and swerved to avoid a crash just before the fatal collision.

The woman was dead at the scene and the man died either during a helicopter flight to a hospital or shortly after, Eborn said.
