Clinton man allegedly shoots ex-girlfriend’s date in Layton
Police look for evidence Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, after a shooting in Layton Tuesday night and a man's arrested Wednesday morning in Clinton.
SWAT officers on Wednesday morning arrested a Clinton man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new date the night before, Clinton police said.
Aaron Gaitan, 36, was arrested without incident at a trailer on a lot in Clinton and was booked into the Davis County Jail in Farmington on suspicion of several charges, including first-degree felony attempted murder, Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said.
The Layton woman and her date, a 35-year-old man, were on her driveway in the area of 400 N. Main St. when Gaitan arrived and a confrontation began, Lyman said. Gaitan allegedly pulled a pistol and fired three shots during the episode, hitting the victim once in the leg. Gaitan also allegedly punched the woman during the confrontation.
A Layton police probable cause statement said the woman told police Gaitan threatened to kill her and her date and that he struck the man several times on the head with the handgun. Police said the victims told them the male victim backed out of the driveway in his truck and Gaitan allegedly ran up and fired a shot through the passenger window, hitting the man in the thigh. Police said they found two bullet holes in the truck.
Gaitan ran away to a vehicle parked nearby, while the injured man got into his pickup truck and drove until he flagged down a person who called 911 after the man said he had been shot, Lyman said.
The victim was treated and released from a local hospital. Lyman said investigators had not found a handgun.
The arrest affidavit said Gaitan would not speak to investigators.
