OGDEN — An Ogden man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted and kidnapped a woman Saturday and made a gun threat when a would-be rescuer tried to intervene.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office on Monday charged Jason Loya, 21, with first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping, third-degree felony aggravated assault and a misdemeanor narcotics charge.

Ogden police said in an arrest affidavit that they responded at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday to a call from a woman who said she saw a man and a woman fighting in the street. The caller approached the pair on foot and said the woman appeared to be in distress.

The bystander asked the woman if she needed help and she reportedly said yes and that she wanted to go home, but Loya allegedly grabbed her by the hair and pinned her to the ground.

Loya then turned to the bystander and allegedly said that “if she called police he would shoot” and reached toward his waistband. She feared he had a gun so she ran away and called police.

Police said they located the victim’s mother and sister, who said Loya had been talking to the victim. A records check showed Loya was on probation for a violent assault. Utah Adult Probation and Parole agents accompanied police to Loya’s residence.

There they found Loya and the woman, the left side of her face covered with blood and a significant cut on her head. Medical responders took the woman to a hospital, where she needed staples to close the cut.

Police said they found a shell casing and methamphetamine in Loya’s pockets. They took him to the Weber County Jail, where he was ordered held without bail.
