BOUNTIFUL — Police on Monday night arrested a 37-year-old man after he allegedly kidnapped his daughter and fought officers as they tried to apprehend him.

A police detective was at Dustin Matthews’ home when the man arrived with his three children, the Bountiful Police Department said in an arrest affidavit. The detective had a court order telling Matthews to surrender custody of the children when Matthews allegedly grabbed his 3-year-old daughter and fled.

Police found Matthews several blocks away and he allegedly ignored commands to stop. An officer tried to grab Matthews, who dropped the child and allegedly fought the officer. Police shot Matthews three times with a stun gun and were able to handcuff him.

Matthews was ordered held without bail at the Davis County Jail in Farmington on suspicion of first-degree felony child kidnapping, third-degree felony child endangerment and misdemeanor counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, child abuse and marijuana possession.

The arrest affidavit alleged that Matthews has threatened his family, and he has prior convictions of domestic violence, assaulting police and stalking.

Formal charges had not been filed as of Tuesday morning.
