NORTH OGDEN — Authorities are investigating possible criminal charges against the driver of a car that fled from police Saturday and crashed into a tree, killing two passengers.
A North Ogden officer was making a traffic stop of the car for a minor violation at about 2:30 a.m. when the car allegedly left at high speed, according to a news release. About three blocks west, the officer “saw sparks” and the car crashed into a tree at 450 E. 3100 North.
The driver and two other passengers were taken to a local hospital. Police Sgt. Brandon Morreale said Monday he had no update on the condition of the three. Police were not releasing information about the five occupants, who were all 16 or 17 years old, Morreale said.
It was unclear why the car fled. Morreale said the officer “was trying to catch up” when he saw the crash.
Alcohol and marijuana reportedly were found in the car and police are investigating whether the driver was impaired. If impairment was involved, charges will be screened with the Weber County Attorney’s Office, Morreale said.
