CLEARFIELD — Police have arrested a former Clearfield High School teacher on allegations that he raped a 17-year-old female student in a classroom closet three years ago.

The Clearfield Police Department said in charging documents that it began an investigation in September after the alleged victim, now an adult, reported that Miles Christopher Nance, 39, had sexually groomed and then abused her.

Nance was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Davis County Jail in Farmington on suspicion of rape and forcible sodomy, both first-degree felonies; sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony; and dealing in materials harmful to a minor, a third-degree felony.

The woman told police she was going through a rough time in her life during the 2018-19 school year, when she took a French class taught by Nance. She said he sent a school email offering her support and later communicated with her on private email and Snapchat.

Conversations gradually became more inappropriate and on Snapchat they “roleplayed sexual scenarios,” the arrest affidavit said. Nance allegedly asked her to send him nude photos of herself and he sent her explicit photos and videos of himself, the document said.

The woman reported that Nance performed a sex act on her in a classroom closet and they had intercourse in a closet on another occasion, according to the affidavit.

Nance also allegedly had a Reddit account called “dad’s gone wild” that showed nude photos of him. He shared the account with the girl, and police said they interviewed another person who had seen the account with the alleged victim.

A search in the Utah State Board of Education’s database of active teachers did not show a result for Nance on Thursday. A Davis School District spokesperson said Nance was a teacher at Clearfield High for five years before teaching at Mueller Park Junior High until November 2021.

“Davis School District is committed to protecting students and does not tolerate sexual harassment or sexual violence in our schools or school communities,” reads a district statement. “The safety of our students is our top priority.”

Nance was ordered held without bail. Formal charges had not been filed by Thursday afternoon.

According to court records, a woman obtained a sexual violence protective order against Nance on Nov. 3.
