OGDEN — Narcotics officers arrested a West Haven man at the Salt Lake City airport and found 4,100 fentanyl pills and 378 doses of heroin in his checked luggage, according to charging documents.

David C. Ellis, 39, allegedly had traveled to Mexico and Arizona to acquire the drugs to be dealt in the Ogden area, a probable cause statement by the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force said.

Ellis was arrested in the early morning hours of Thursday and was taken to the Weber County Jail, ordered to be held without bail. He also was wanted locally in two other cases, an aggravated assault and an identify fraud, forgery and theft scheme, police documents said.

The arrest affidavit said narcotics agents learned Ellis was on a flight from Phoenix. Ellis allegedly had a small amount of methamphetamine in his pocket and allegedly admitted in a police interview later that the fentanyl and heroin were to be sold locally. Agents said they had been investigating Ellis for several months.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office on Friday charged Ellis with four felony charges related to a February fraud case in Ogden. He faces two counts of identity fraud and a single count of producing or transferring fraudulent documents, all second-degree felonies, as well as a charge of third-degree felony forgery.

An Ogden Police Department arrest document alleged that Ellis and a co-conspirator were involved in the theft of a Georgia resident’s identity that led to the defrauding of an Ogden business totaling more than $27,000.

Prosecutors on Friday also charged Ellis with third-degree felony aggravated assault stemming from a Sept. 20 incident at a Riverdale motel. In an arrest affidavit, Riverdale police said a woman told them that Ellis was assaulting her and she feared for her life, but she was able to escape and lock herself in the bathroom because her dog attacked Ellis.

The woman told police that during an argument, Ellis allegedly pushed her to the ground, kicked her buttocks, repeatedly stomped on her face and strangled her. Ellis, after the airport arrest, told police he had argued with the woman but would not discuss the incident further.

In the drug case, Ellis is held on suspicion of two counts of second-degree felony possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute and a class A misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance.
