OGDEN — A fast-moving grass fire forced the evacuation of about two dozen homes Tuesday afternoon, but a fire official said later that crews had the blaze surrounded and structures were protected.

The fire, which started at 3:51 p.m., had burned about 7 acres by 5:20 p.m., Ogden Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Slater said.

The fire was moving southeast from Valley Drive and the Rainbow Gardens gift shop near the mouth of Ogden Canyon, Slater said. “It moved at a really rapid pace,” Slater said. “It’s not contained but it’s surrounded.”

The fire also reached an area of heavy timber that would require time to get to. Slater said helicopter water drops were underway and that Ogden, Weber Fire District and state and federal firefighters had been called in.

Portions of northern Buchanan Avenue and 1950 South Street were evacuated. Residents were sent to a church at 1550 Polk Ave. to get help from the Red Cross, Slater said.

As crews worked in 100-degree heat, Slater said recovery trailers were stationed so firefighters could be cycled in and out for relief and cooling.

The fire’s cause was not immediately known.

Some fire crews were staging at Rainbow Gardens and the Timbermine restaurant.

Starting at $4.32/week.
