BRIGHAM CITY — A judge issued a summons Monday ordering a 39-year-old Brigham City man to appear in court on charges alleging that he used his son’s Instagram account to ask teenage girls for nude photos.

The Box Elder County Attorney’s Office last week charged the man with six counts of third-degree felony attempted sexual exploitation of a minor related to events that occurred in May. First District Court records said the man was arrested in August, booked into jail and released pending charges.

The man allegedly sent Instagram messages to six juveniles on May 8-9 asking for nude images, according to a Brigham City Police Department probable cause statement.

The man’s son and wife were out of state at the time. The mother reported to police May 9 that the messages had gone out to girls on her son’s Instagram friends list. She gave police access to the social media account and a detective served a search warrant to Instagram. The company disclosed the messages, along with a photo of the man that he allegedly sent to one of the girls.

A second warrant, issued to an internet service provider, resulted in tracing the IP address to the man’s home, according to the arrest affidavit.

The man told police he had taken his son’s phone but he could not recall having sent the messages. He told police he was “very angry with his son at the time” and had been “drinking alcohol heavily on a nightly basis.”

Judge Brandon Maynard set a Nov. 21 court appearance for the man.

The Standard-Examiner chose not to identify the man to protect the victims’ privacy.
