ROY — A Roy man was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of a 2-year-old boy.

According to a statement posted on the Roy City Police Department Facebook page, Jonathan Dunn, 36, was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail. He has been charged with one count of aggravated murder and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies, plus one count of aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony.

According to the post, police were summoned by Dunn — who is identified as a friend of the victim’s parents — to a residence in the area of 1950 West and 4450 South around 9:56 a.m. Thursday for an unresponsive male. The child was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital where he died from the injuries. The victim’s 2-year-old twin sister also was taken to the hospital with several injuries. Another post by the department listed her in critical but stable condition.

There were several other children in the home unrelated to the victims, police said.

Court documents state that Dunn was babysitting the children at the time.

“Upon arrival, (a Roy officer) observed the 2-year-old male laying on the front porch of the address listed above with several visible injuries to his face and body,” an affidavit of probable cause reads. “When (the officer) walked into the residence to speak with other officers on scene, (the officer) observed another 2-year-old female who was in the care of Jonathan Dunn and the twin of the 2-year-old boy, sitting on the couch with several visible bruises to her face also. The dispatch notes indicated the male child who was not conscious had fallen from the couch and had several bruises to his face. The 2-year-old child was taken by medical personnel to the Mckay Dee Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by the medical staff. He had dozens of significant bruises to his face, head, genitals, and the rest of his body.”

In interviews with the police, Dunn stated the night before he was playing a game with the kids and “he began to punch the male and female child repeatedly in the back and sides and chest.”

The affidavit also says that Dunn said he pinched the children all over their bodies, threw them on the bed while they cried and punched them “knowing that he was causing them bodily pain.” Several other acts are described throughout the affidavit.

“Jonathan told (the officer) he could see bruising to both children as a result of these actions. He stated that he gave them Tylenol because he knew they would have a headache, gave the male child children’s cough medicine and the female child children’s sleep aid.”

The affidavit continues that, in the morning, Dunn found the male child wheezing and administered more cough medicine, soon after which he lost consciousness.

“Jonathan stated that he began CPR on the child however, it was later learned that Jonathan did not administer the life-saving measures on the child. The female child was transported to another local hospital to be treated for a brain bleed. She also had extensive bruising all over her body, head, face and genitals.”

Dunn previously was convicted and sentenced for felony child abuse in 2017.

The Roy City Police Department stated that the investigation is ongoing.
