LAYTON — A man fired several shots and kicked in an apartment door Tuesday, terrifying two people who were asleep inside, police said.

Officers arrested John Wyatt Archuleta, 22, at about 2:40 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Fairfield Road.

A Layton Police Department probable cause statement said an officer responding to a reported burglary in progress heard several shots on the east side of the complex and found Archuleta with a handgun tucked in his waistband.

Archuleta allegedly kicked in the door of the apartment management office, which was closed, then went to building C and knocked on a door. He allegedly told police that he fired three shots into the door and then kicked it in.

He saw two women inside who he did not recognize. “They said they were afraid when he came in,” the arrest affidavit said of the apartment residents.

“It was never really clear with us” what motivated the break-ins, Lt. Travis Lyman, police spokesperson, said Tuesday afternoon. “He said he was looking for a woman, but we don’t know who or what he intended to do when he found her. We didn’t get a lot of logical information from him.”

Police said they found four bullet holes in the apartment door and shell casings on the ground by the door. Some of the shots hit a wall and a closet door inside the apartment.

Archuleta was booked into the Davis County Jail in Farmington on suspicion of four counts of felony discharge of a firearm into a building, a third-degree felony; and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disturbing the peace.
