BRIGHAM CITY — Police are investigating the death of a Layton man whose body was found within half a mile from where his car crashed into a Box Elder County ditch during snowy weather.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to a report of a single-vehicle crash on state Route 13 at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The road was slick with low visibility and the car, a 2018 Honda Civic, slid off the road into the ditch, according to a UHP media release.

The car had minimal damage and the driver could not be found. The car’s registered owner was contacted and troopers determined that Samuel Slade, 19, should have been driving. Family members were not sure where he might have been.

Later in the morning, family members called UHP, saying they still had not heard from Slade and a search was resumed. The UHP release said family members found Slade’s body.

The UHP is investigating the crash and the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office is handling the death investigation. Efforts to contact a sheriff’s office spokesperson were not immediately successful.
