Alleged shooter, 1 other arrested in Ogden slaying; victim named
OGDEN — Two men were charged Friday for their alleged involvement in a car-to-car shooting that killed a man on Tuesday afternoon, Ogden police said.
Mauro Soto, 21, and Anthony Barela, 30, had been in custody since Wednesday morning on unrelated warrants. Now Soto is charged with aggravated murder, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, felony discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice. Barela is charged with obstruction of justice, according to an Ogden Police Department news release.
Police on Friday identified the victim as Juan Garcia, 24, of Ogden. Charging documents said a car pulled alongside Garcia’s vehicle and Soto allegedly fired several shots at Garcia. The shooting was at 12th Street and Harrison Boulevard.
Chelci Seber, 21, was arrested Wednesday and charged with obstruction of justice in the case. Charging documents said she was in the car with Soto and the vehicle was registered to her. The three suspects were arrested after being found hiding in a motor home, police said.
Soto, of Washington Terrace, was sentenced in a plea bargain to no-tolerance probation in September 2021 after he chased down and shot up a car carrying his pregnant ex-girlfriend in busy downtown Ogden.
Chase Hansen of the Weber County Attorney’s Office said during Soto’s sentencing hearing that prosecutors worked out a plea bargain with the defense because the victim was uncooperative and there were “factual issues” in the case.
Charging documents said Soto was a passenger in a vehicle on Sept. 16, 2020, that pursued a car carrying his ex-girlfriend and another man and that Soto allegedly fired 14 .45 caliber shots at the vehicle, narrowly missing the occupants.
At a preliminary hearing in December 2020, prosecutors showed photos of the bullet-pocked car, including holes through the seats that narrowly missed the occupants.
