ROY — A Roy man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of first-degree felony murder, four days after his wife was shot to death.
Dave Richard Meyer, 69, allegedly told Roy police that his wife “has been asking him to kill her for a while now due to the amount of pain she has been in.” He said she was injured in a car crash 13 years ago that resulted in chronic back pain.
According to a Roy Police Department probable cause statement, Meyer allegedly told police the couple was in their bedroom and Meyer was rubbing his wife’s back. He allegedly picked up his 9 mm handgun and, while rubbing her back with his left hand, shot her in the temple with the gun in his right hand.
Officer Stuart Hackworth, Roy police spokesperson, said Monday the shooting occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and Meyer told relatives about it on Saturday. Meyer then called police. Meyer said he left the woman’s body in the home after the shooting.
Police were awaiting autopsy results Monday before releasing the wife’s name, Hackworth said.
“We’re still investigating his story to help confirm anything in his account about when things occurred and why they occurred,” Hackworth said. Regarding why Meyer waited four days to report the death, Hackworth said Meyer in general “gave the explanation that he didn’t know what to do, that he was somewhat in shock.”
Meyer told officers he and his wife smoked marijuana every night and had done so for 10 years. They did not have medical marijuana cards, according to police.
Meyer was taken to the Weber County Jail on suspicion of murder, second-degree felony obstruction of justice and two counts of third-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person. The Weber County Attorney’s Office filed the charges in 2nd District Court on Monday.
Police asked that Meyer be held without bail because he may be a flight risk. Meyer lost his house in an auction on Friday and he was evicted, the arrest affidavit said.
