WEST HAVEN — Two Weber County deputies are on leave following a domestic call turned fatal.

According to a press release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, officers were summoned to an apartment at 2265 S. 1100 West in West Haven on Monday for a man who reportedly was threatening self-harm and suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

“Upon arrival, deputies found a chaotic domestic scene and began communicating with the individual, who was in possession of an edged weapon and holding two children hostage,” the release said. “Deputies attempted to deescalate the situation and verbally work to get the adult male to release the children. Unfortunately, the adult male escalated the situation, making statements of harm to one of the children, forcing our deputies to take action. Two deputies fired rounds at the adult male, resulting in his death. The children were rescued without harm.”

No other people were harmed in the incident and the man was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

“The Weber County Attorney’s Office activated its critical incident protocol, and their investigators are currently on scene conducting an investigation into the incident,” the release added. “The two deputies who discharged their weapons have been placed on leave pending the investigation, in accordance with county policy and standard practice in any officer-involved shooting.”

The release concludes by stating that no other information will be released until the conclusion of the investigation, as well as a message of condolence.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasize the availability of resources for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm,” the release said. “We are grateful that no-one else was injured due to the quick actions of our deputies.”

The sheriff’s office did not identify the man who was shot or say what time the incident occurred. A message left with the department was not immediately returned Tuesday morning.
