A 19-year-old man has been booked into the Weber County Jail after leading law enforcement officers on a chase through multiple cities Sunday night, ending when an officer shot at the elusive vehicle.

According to Sgt. Terance Lavely of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, Carter Edelman was arrested following the incident, which began when deputies were dispatched to a report of a potential DUI in the lower Uintah area around 9:43 p.m.

The suspect’s vehicle was later spotted near Riverdale Road and 1900 West in Roy, according to a press release. Lavely said deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but after initially slowing down, the vehicle reportedly left the scene.

A chase ensued throughout Roy and Riverdale, and multiple law enforcement agencies collaborated in efforts to apprehend the driver, who the release claims “deliberately collided with two police vehicles” during the pursuit.

Lavely said a Roy police officer fired on the vehicle.

According to the release, “Minor injuries were sustained by Law Enforcement and the suspect,” adding that “everyone has been cleared medically.” Elaborating, Lavely said a deputy injured his hand “in the struggle to arrest Carter” and another has aches from the vehicle collision.

Lavely said he could not provide additional information about the shooting — including if Edelman was injured by gunfire, or whether officers specifically targeted their shots at the vehicle or its driver — and instead directed further questions to the Weber County Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Team, which is investigating the night’s events.

Edelman was arrested on suspicion of DUI, reckless driving, driving on a denied license, failure to stop, interference with an arresting officer and two counts of aggravated assault. Throughout the chase, Lavely said, Edelman allegedly prevented a female passenger from leaving the vehicle, resulting in him also being booked for unlawful detention.

As of Monday morning, formal charges had not been filed in the case, though court records show Edelman has run afoul of traffic laws several times over the past 15 months. Most recently, he pleaded not guilty last month to misdemeanor charges that included not having vehicle insurance.
