OGDEN — Following a nationwide search, Ogden appears to be sticking closer to home with the appointment of a new chief of police.

According to a press release from Ogden City, Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski has recommended the appointment of Ogden Police Department Deputy Chief Jacob Sube to the role of full-time chief. Sube has served as the interim chief of police since the retirement of Eric Young in August.

“Sube, a 23-year veteran of the Ogden City Police Department and lifelong resident of the greater Ogden area, has served the community in various leadership roles, including Deputy Chief of Police since June 2021,” the release said. “His extensive experience, strategic vision, and dedication to enhancing police-community relations make him the ideal choice to lead the department.”

Nadolski said Sube is a perfect fit for the role.

“Through our nationwide search for a new chief, Jacob Sube proved far and above the best fit for our community,” Nadolski said in the press release. “His compassion and deep respect for all people of Ogden was shaped by his experience growing up under challenging circumstances on Ogden Avenue. His personal background in combination with his extensive experience within the Ogden Police Department make him uniquely qualified to lead our city’s law enforcement efforts.”

Sube said he looks forward to taking on the position.

“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve as the Chief of Police for the city I have dedicated nearly 24 years of my career to,” he said in the release. “Throughout my career, I have adhered to the highest standards of integrity and accountability, fostering an environment where our officers are well-equipped and motivated to deliver the highest standard of service. As Chief, I am committed to enhancing our relationships with the community, elected officials, and other agencies, with a particular focus on building stronger connections with our youth. By fostering trust and understanding with the younger generation, I aim to create a safer, more connected community while continuing to advance our department’s strategic direction.”

The press release notes that Sube has had a very active role in the department for years.

“Sube’s nomination follows a distinguished career in which he has managed critical aspects of the department, including overseeing the $28-million police budget, leading the response to critical incidents, and enhancing police-community relations through proactive engagement,” the release said. “As Deputy Chief, Sube provided strategic leadership for both Field Operations and Support Services, served as Acting Chief of Police, and played a key role in the development and implementation of the department’s Strategic Plan.”

The public will have multiple opportunities to comment on Sube’s nomination at Ogden City Council meetings Tuesday and Oct. 1. The Council will have final advice and consent on the appointment.
