Firefighters battle a blaze at an abandoned care center Monday, July 21, 2025. Two juveniles were charged with arson and criminal trespass of a dwelling in connection with the blaze.OGDEN — Two juveniles have been arrested following a fire that consumed the former Wide Horizons Residential Care Facility.
According to a press release from the Ogden City Fire Department, firefighters were summoned to a fire at an abandoned structure in the 900 block of Monroe Boulevard just after 5 p.m. Monday.
“Upon arrival, units discovered smoke and flames coming from and abandoned assisted living facility,” the release said. “Due to the intense fire, dense smoke, and abandoned building, firefighters went into a defensive strategy and did not make entry into the structure. Smoke and flames were exhausting through numerous portions of the roof; the firefighters surrounded the building to keep the exposed apartments from being damaged.”
Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater told the Standard-Examiner that the defensive posture meant it took a little while longer to bring the fire under control.
“We didn’t put anybody inside the structure because of the safety of the firefighters and because it was abandoned and slated for demolition,” he said. “It took us a couple of hours. Within 30-40 minutes, we knew it wasn’t going to go anywhere so we felt confident it was just going to be contained to that structure. But to get the actual fire out, because we didn’t have anybody inside, it took us a couple of hours.”
The fire department release added that three juveniles were seen running from the structure prior to the arrival of firefighters. The Ogden City Police Department, which also responded to the fire, quickly began to assist with the investigation.
Per a press release from the Ogden City Police Department, the investigation began as firefighters continued to douse the flames.
“Officers conducted an area search, and with the assistance of community members, located two male juveniles hiding in a nearby garage,” the OPD release said. “The individuals were taken into custody without incident.
“Ogden Police Investigations Bureau responded to the scene. Through investigative efforts, probable cause was established to charge the juveniles with Arson (2nd Degree Felony) and Criminal Trespass of a Dwelling. Both suspects were transported to the Weber Valley Detention Center.”
Due to the age of the suspects, no names were released.
“This incident highlights the strong collaboration between Ogden City Police, Ogden Fire Department, and assisting agencies in protecting public safety,” the OPD release continued. “While the investigation remains ongoing, there is no current threat to the community.”
Damages are estimated at around $700,000 and Slater said the building is a total loss. Responders included the Ogden City Fire Department, North View Fire District, Washington Terrace, South Ogden City Fire Department and Ogden City Police Department.
