Police car lights breakingHYRUM — Police from departments around Northern Utah found themselves in a standoff with a man who allegedly told dispatch Sunday morning that he had killed his wife.
According to a release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home in Hyrum at around 5 a.m. after the call was received. Upon their arrival, the 45-year-old suspect reportedly opened fire, forcing the deputies to take cover and call for the agency’s SWAT team.
Per the release, the man later fired upon the SWAT officers, prompting them to return fire. Units from the Brigham City and Ogden police departments were ultimately called to the scene, along with an armored truck from Logan, and a containment perimiter was set up around the man’s house.
A negotiations team later made contact with the man, who reportedly sent pictures of a bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the house.
Over the next “few hours,” during which authorities had no contact with the man, windows were cleared so SWAT officers could see into the house.
Just after 11 a.m., Sheriff Chad Jensen updated the situation, noting that the scene in Hyrum was “secure” and the investigation had been turned over to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team. He also directed all further inquiries to the Cache County Attorney’s Office, possibly indicating the suspect had been taken into custody.
