Fire at mouth of Weber Canyon contained after briefly threatening structures

A new grass fire started at the mouth of Weber Canyon early Wednesday morning but as of that afternoon was already listed as being 50% contained.
Utah Fire Info indicated that the fire started around 3:15 a.m. and ended up burning 30 acres.
In response to the blaze, northbound lanes of US-89 were closed at the I-84 junction and power was temporarily shut off to around 1,800 customers in the area but both restrictions were lifted later on Wednesday.
Voluntary evacuations were ordered for homes near Bybee Drive but they were no longer threatened as fire crews moved into the mop-up phase of fighting the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This was a much smaller and more manageable blaze than the Rocky Canyon fire that started burning to the southeast along I-84, south of Morgan, on Aug. 7.
That fire is listed by Utah Fire Info to have burned 16,464 acres and is currently 85% contained.
The website lists the overall fires in the state during 2026, how they were caused and how many acres were burned. Utah has now had a total of 882 fires that have burned 538,056 total acres.
Of those fires, 439 were determined to be caused by humans, burning 91,357 acres, and 391 were determined to be naturally caused, burning 300,039 acres. There are 52 fires where the cause is yet to be determined that have burned 146,660 acres.
