OGDEN — For the second time in a week, a suspect in an out-of-state homicide investigation has been captured in Ogden.
According to a press release from the Ogden City Police Department sent Tuesday morning, Ogden Police assisted Waushara County, Wisconsin, authorities in locating and apprehending a homicide suspect in Ogden City Sunday evening.
“Randy Jenks, age 36, is wanted in connection with a criminal homicide that occurred in Wisconsin,” the release said. “He is currently being held in the Weber County Jail on First Degree Homicide.”
Cpt. Tim Scott of the Ogden City Police Department told the Standard-Examiner Tuesday that OPD was notified of Jenks’ presene in the community by authorities in Wisconsin.
“We were contacted by Waushara County, Wisconsin’s sheriff’s department and notified the subject may be at a residence in Ogden,” Scott said. “We got a call on the 8th at 7:48 in the evening. We went to the residence in Ogden and officers were able to make contact there and negotiate him out of the house.”
The Ogden City Police Department has released a short body cam clip of the arrest and posted it to their Facebook page.
“Jenks was transported to the Ogden City Police Department, where additional investigative steps were completed in coordination with Wisconsin authorities,” the release said. “The investigation remains ongoing, and any further information will be released by the investigating agency.”
Scott said the extradition process is getting underway and it could be a week or more before Jenks is sent back to Wisconsin.
Sunday’s arrest was the second high-profile case of a person being arrested in Ogden in connection with an out-of-state homicide investigation.
In another Facebook post Tuesday, Ogden Chief of Police Jake Sube sought to assure the public that this is an unusual situation.
“Over the past week, the Ogden Police Department helped apprehend two out-of-state homicide suspects in two unrelated cases,” he said. “Ogden is not a place where violent criminals come to run, hide, or blend in. If you victimize people and come here to hide, we will find you.”
Last Tuesday, a suspect in a Las Vegas double-homicide was arrested in Roy after being spotted in Ogden.
“In the first case, an ALPR alert in Ogden notified officers of a stolen vehicle,” Sube said in the Facebook post. “Based on what was known at the time, a pursuit began but was terminated to protect the safety of innocent bystanders. Officers immediately followed up and learned the driver was wanted in connection with a Las Vegas double homicide involving a woman and a toddler.
“From there, the response was exactly what the public should expect from professional law enforcement. Ogden officers quickly coordinated and shared actionable suspect and vehicle information with our neighboring agencies, and that coordination paid off. A short time later, the vehicle was located in Roy, and Roy officers moved decisively to apprehend the suspect after he fled on foot. Coordination between the Ogden and Roy police departments was critical to the safe outcome of this situation. Ogden officers took custody of the suspect, who was arrested on local charges, including felony evading. During a follow-up interview conducted by Ogden detectives, the suspect confessed to the double homicide.”
Sube said Sunday’s case differed greatly from what occurred last Tuesday.
“In the second case, we received a tip that a homicide suspect wanted in connection with the alleged first-degree murder in Waushara County, Wisconsin, had traveled to Ogden,” he said. “Our officers responded to a residence where they took the suspect into custody without incident. Everyone at the home was confirmed safe, and officers located potential evidence connected to the Wisconsin homicide case.”
He said these are examples of the Ogden City Police Department’s commitment to keeping the Ogden public safe in an accountable manner.
“The arrest of these two individuals reflects exactly how we protect Ogden every day,” he said. “We use technology, relentless police work and coordinated action with our regional partners to find violent offenders, take them into custody, and deliver them to justice. We pursue violent offenders aggressively, and we do it the right way every time. We follow the Constitution, the law, and our policies, and we take criminals off the street and hold them accountable.”
