Another man imprisoned for Roy gunpoint robbery
OGDEN — A Morgan man who pleaded guilty to robbing a Roy home at gunpoint was sentenced to prison Wednesday.
Dexter Skinner, 19, will serve 5 years to life for his first-degree felony of aggravated robbery, and two terms of 1 to 15 years in the Utah State Prison for his second-degree felonies of robbery, all of which will run concurrently.
“You’re a threat to the community,” 2nd District Judge Ernie Jones told Skinner at the sentencing hearing, reflecting the defendant’s extensive criminal record.
This sentence Marc Van Huizen is satisfied with.
Van Huizen is father to Cooper Van Huizen, one of three co-defendants in this case who was sentenced to prison for 1 to 15 years. A sentence Marc Van Huizen is quite displeased with. His father believes Cooper, a 16-year-old, was wrongfully tried.
After receiving numerous donations from strangers, the family hired attorney Elizabeth Hunt to attempt to mitigate Van Huizen’s sentence and reverse decisions throughout the case, beginning with the decision to bind Van Huizen over as an adult.
Cooper is scheduled to be seen before the Board of Pardons Nov. 11.
During the 2013 armed robbery, the suspects forced their way into the home and took items such as wallets and cellphones, using weapons to incite fear, according to police, who believe the alleged victims and suspects have familial ties.
However, Marc Van Huizen says this was not a “home invasion” but a “consensual entry” as written in the court discovery.
A restitution hearing for Skinner is set for Oct. 15.
