Airman accused of robbing bank to appear in court Monday
HILL AIR FORCE BASE — An airman charged with robbing a Layton bank will make his second court appearance Monday.
Sonny West, 20, who is accused of robbing Washington Federal Credit Union in Layton Nov. 10, will appear in the 2nd District Court. He is charged with aggravated robbery, a first degree felony, for threatening to use a dangerous weapon while committing theft.
Court documents say West allegedly demanded money from employees of the credit union.
“He pointed a black handgun at the employees as he gave orders,” state court documents. “Cash was placed in his backpack and he fled the area.”
According to the documents, a tip led officers to West’s dorm room on Hill Air Force Base, where they located the suspect’s clothes and the stolen cash. Officers uncovered additional evidence, including a BB gun, mask, gloves, sunglasses and hat allegedly used in the robbery, the documents say.
A Layton Police Department Facebook post said he was taken into custody at 2:49 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at his Hill Air Force Base dorm.
West, an airman first class, is an entry controller in the 75th Security Forces Squadron, a statement from Hill Air Force Base said. He joined the Air Force in November 2015 and has been assigned to Hill since May.
After his arrest, West was removed from law enforcement-related duties on the base, Hill’s statement said. Base officials are cooperating with the Layton Police Department’s investigation.
Layton Police Department Lt. Travis Lyman previously told the Standard-Examiner a small amount of money was taken during the robbery.
West is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
