Man cleared in Riverdale fatal shooting pleads guilty to related gun charges
OGDEN — A Riverdale man cleared by police in the self-defense shooting death of his girlfriend has pleaded guilty to two charges of illegal gun possession.
After police determined Scott Sandlin, 42, was justified in shooting Jenna Manuel on Feb. 7, 2016, Weber County prosecutors charged him with four counts of third-degree felony possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person; a third-degree felony count of exposing a child to controlled substances; and single misdemeanor counts of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

In a plea bargain approved March 31 by 2nd District Judge Michael DiReda, Sandlin pleaded guilty to two of the gun charges in return for dismissal of the other five charges. Prosecutors said they would not oppose a reduction of charges if Sandlin completes probation with no violations.
When police arrived after the shooting, they smelled marijuana, and after obtaining a search warrant, found four firearms, Sandlin’s plea document shows.
A Riverdale Police Department affidavit said officers found two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun in the home Sandlin shared with Manuel, 30, and the woman’s 8-year-old daughter. Sandlin’s blood was tested, and the sample was positive for the active ingredient in marijuana, the document said.
Sandlin, who told police Manuel charged him with a knife, remains free pending sentencing June 1. He could face a sentence of up to five years in the Utah State Prison or a $5,000 fine on each charge.
