LAYTON — A 40-year-old Bluffdale man has been sentenced to four prison terms for a DUI crash that killed three people on Interstate 15 in Kaysville last year.

Myron M. Barlow was driving a pickup truck that crashed into a car that was slowing after a truck ahead lost its load on June 29, 2021, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Killed in the crash were Stephen Colter, 77, of Healdsburg, California, and Ariana Colter, 37, of North Salt Lake — father and sister of bestselling “Bridgerton” novelist Julia Quinn — who were passengers in the car.

The Davis County Attorney’s Office charged Barlow with two counts of third-degree felony negligent automobile homicide. Prosecutors added a third homicide charge in April of this year after another occupant of the car, David Patrick Langley, 44, Ariana Colter’s husband, died at a rehabilitation center.

In a plea bargain on Aug. 29 this year, Barlow pleaded guilty to the three homicide charges and a third-degree felony DUI charge. Prosecutors in return dismissed three other charges.

At sentencing on Oct. 28 in Layton, 2nd District Judge Ronald Russell ordered Barlow to serve four terms of up to five years in the Utah State Prison, the sentences to be served consecutively. Russell gave Barlow credit for time already served, more than a year in the Davis County Jail in Farmington. The judge also ordered Barlow to pay more than $13,000 in restitution.

“The state recommended consecutive sentences because of the significant and permanent harm caused by the defendant’s actions,” Jason Nelson, a Davis County prosecutor, said Tuesday.

The court heard from relatives of the crash victims and the judge received several letters of support from Barlow’s relatives.

According to charging documents, a catering truck lost a load of canvas bags on southbound I-15 and several cars slowed. The Colters were killed when Barlow’s truck hit their vehicle.

The Highway Patrol said Barlow was given a breath alcohol test, which registered at 0.146%. The Utah limit is 0.05%.

UHP investigators screened with county prosecutors the possibility of charges against the catering company, but no charges were filed.
