According to a press release from The Ogden City Fire Department received Wednesday, crews were summoned to a blaze at an apartment complex in the 700 N. block of Washington Boulevard around 10:17 p.m. Tuesday night.
“Upon arrival, units discovered smoke and flame coming from the windows of a 2-story apartment building,” the release said. “Firefighters acted swiftly and aggressively to search the structure and get water on the fire. The fire had consumed a large portion of the middle townhome; the search was completed and the apartments evacuated, crews the fire within extinguished with 10 minutes.”
In a follow-up email from Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater, sent early Wednesday afternoon, he said an investigation had determined the fire was started by “improper disposal of smoking material and started on the outside of the structure.”
According to the press release, around $600,000 in damage was done to the complex. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist two people who had been displaced by the fire and two people received medical care.
“We treated one person with minor burns and another with mild smoke inhalation, both were treated and released,” the release said. “Residents in other units were able to return after the fire.
Slater said that three apartments were impacted in total and that crews were on scene for a total of three hours.
“We are grateful that no serious injures occurred and the community is safe,” he said.
