NFL Players Who Entered the World of Politics After Retirement

By Staff | Apr 20, 2023

The NFL is one of the most loved games around the world. Its outstanding teams have created many star players and are still counting.

These players could turn the tables in the game and even the NFL picks in gambling. While many of these players went on to dominate the NFL world, others went beyond that after retirement.

For example, Tom Brady announced retirement recently and decided to be an analyst with Fox

Sports. Similarly, many other players decided to enter the world of politics too. Here’s a list of their names:

Steve Largent

Steve Largent has made his name in the NFL by playing for the Seattle Seahawks for 14 years. He was considered one of the best wide receivers of all time. By the time he retired, Largent had all the NFL receiving awards. In 1995, he was also inducted into the Pro football hall of fame. After his sports career, Steve Largent was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was quite successful in politics, too, as he served four terms and won over 60% of the votes in the elections. In 2002, Largent resigned from his post and ran for governor of Oklahoma. However, he

lost the post to democrat Brad Henry.

Anthony Gonzalez

The American politician Anthony Gonzalez was a famous NFL wide receiver in the late 2000s. At first, he was a college football player at Ohio State University, a Philosophy student. However, in the 2007 NFL draft, he was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the team. In 2018, Gonzalez announced his retirement from his sports career. He then ran as a Republican for the House of Representatives in Ohio. Fortunately, he won the elections and served the office for two years.

Herschel Walker

The sixty-one-year-old former NFL star Herschel Walker is known for being a part of different teams, including the Dallas, Vikings, and New York Giants. He started as a college football player

at the University of Georgia and ended his career with the Dallas Cowboys in 1997. In 2022, Walker was nominated as a Republican in the 2022 United States Senate election in Georgia. He was also a Donald Trump supporter in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. Eventually, in 2018, Trump appointed him to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. He was asked to resign from the post in 2022 under the governance of President Biden.

Jon Runyan

The Houston Oilers drafted Jon Runyan in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL draft. The iconic player then played for multiple teams like Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers. At the end

of the 2009 NFL season, he retired from his sports career and launched his campaign for Congress against John Adler. He won the election in 2010. However, in 2013, he decided not to go for any re-election. Later in 2016, Runayan was appointed Vice President of the Policy and Rules administration.

Jack Kemp

Jack Kemp has been a famous player in different sports leagues like NFL, CFL, and AFL. He was a professional quarterback for 13 years and went on to dominate the football world with his skills. After his retirement, Kemp became a member of the Republican Party in New York. He served as a Housing Secretary during the active years of George Bush. Between 1971 to 1989, he served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives. Kemp was also a contender for the presidential nomination in the Republican primaries of 1988. Jack Kemp passed away in 2009 due to cancer.

So, that’s all. Did you know the history of any of these NFL players turned politicians? Which one of them is your favorite?
