OREM — How do you measure the success of the Utah All-Star Wrestling Duals, which will celebrate its 10th birthday tonight at the McKay Events Center??
Did the big, energetic crowds at the annual event encourage host Utah Valley University to introduce wrestling to its roster, making UVU the only in-state school to offer wrestling at the NCAA level??Are the duals a great way to determine — on the mat — who the best wrestler at any weight is this year??Does it provide outstanding wrestlers at school not known for their team prowess a chance to perform in front of a big appreciative crowd??Perhaps, all of the above.?The 10th version of the All-Star Duals offers 64 wrestlers a chance to perform beginning at 7 p.m., with three mats offering matches throughout the evening.?”We are very excited, and are looking forward to this year’s matches,” Utah Amateur Wrestling Foundation board member Ross Brunson said. “We think we are putting on a great exhibition of wrestling and helping out those that love the sport.”?Fifteen Top of Utah grappers, the elite individual wrestlers as chosen by coaches and fans, will showcase their skills.?The prestigious group includes Davis’ Brett Naylor, Weber’s Derek Malan, Viewmont’s Danner Kjar and Mitch Rasmussen, Fremont’s Ronnie Wardleigh and Jed Craynor, Layton’s Derek Thomas.?Also, Box Elder’s Koleton Hardy and Daniel Crook, Mountain Crest’s Corrick Knight and Raider Lofthouse, Morgan’s Matt Gallen and Ben Lomond’s Zach Boden.?A pair of Layton wrestlers, Brayden Humpherys and Ken Astle, were unable to participate due to injuries. Box Elder’s Cody Bunderson and Viewmont’s Mitch McCloy were invited to compete in a pair of wild-card matches to fill out the mats. ?
Organizers put together a number of showcase matches, topped by Alta’s Carson Kuhn meeting Uintah’s Colby Christesen at 119 pounds in the final event of the night.?Other feature matches include Boden vs. Payson’s Brady Loveless at 171 pounds, Mountain Crest’s Raider Lofthouse vs. South Summit’s Johnsen Crandall at 152 pounds. Box Elder heavyweight Daniel Crook and Hurricane’s Daniel Nielsen also figures to be a good match.?In the only event involving two locals, Morgan’s Matt Gallen will square off with Viewmont’s Mitch Rasmussen at 152 pounds.?Lofthouse, Bingham’s Kade Moss, and Altamont’s Bryson Foy are three-time state champions headed into their senior seasons.?The 4-A team won last year’s competition with 10 wins out of 14 matches. The three other squads will look to reverse that trend, including a 2-A/1-A team that includes five Millard grapplers..?
